Intro to Pinterest & My Experience on the Platform

I am not a regular Pinterest user. In fact, I did not have the app downloaded until I needed it for an assignment I completed earlier this week.

A few months ago, I received a notification that my phone was running out of storage. While deleting duplicate photos and unused apps, I decided to delete Pinterest. I used the platform frequently in high school, saving ideas for prom and homecoming dresses, gathering post ideas for my school’s Hope Squad social media account and gathering inspiration for my senior year festivities. Beyond that, my activity on Pinterest was limited.

In my Principles of Social Media class this week, we covered a chapter on Pinterest and completed a correlating assignment on the platform. Pinterest was created in November of 2009 by a group of college friends: Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp. The platform has 537 million monthly users and over 240 billion pins. I was surprised to learn that the highest age group of users on the platform is 18 to 24. To my knowledge, none of my friends is currently on the platform.

I was not surprised to learn that 70% of the users on the platform and that weekdays are the best time to post. Other takeaways included the wide variety of pin formats, that weekly pinners are seven times more likely to say Pinterest is the most influential platform for purchasing and that it is recommended for brands to pin anywhere between five and 30 times per day.

After redownloading the app for this assignment, I was impressed by how easy it was to search for and discover content. However, I received multiple push notifications relating to social media content, which became somewhat distracting. Going forward, I can see myself using Pinterest to find recipes, but I would be hesitant to use it for shopping because of concerns about scams.

  1. Hey Alexa! While I have had the app for a couple of years, I didn't use it much. This assignment definitely got me more comfortable with Pinterest overall. I do agree that Pinterest is pretty user friendly! Thanks for sharing the points that stood out to you the most in the chapter!

  2. Hi! I used Pinterest a lot in high school to save ideas and brainstorm. I agree I don't know many people who use it now, but I often use it when creating media content. For example, I search for backgrounds, post ideas or images I can use. I love making a board for specific color pallets. Although I don't post or interact with others on the platform at all, I was surprised to hear that it can be useful for brands to post their products on.

  3. Hey Alexa! I have had the app for a few years, but I rarely get on it. I do agree that Pinterest is a very easy app to navigate and look up photos of ideas. I am also shocked at the age of users mostly on Pinterest, because none of my friends are on it either. I hope you have a good rest of your week!

  4. I like how you included your personal experience with deleting and then redownloading Pinterest, it made your post feel really real and relatable. I also thought it was interesting that the main age group is 18 to 24, because I wouldn’t expect that either based on how people around us use it.
