The Society for Advancement of Management Conference

This past week, I attended the Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) conference in Rhode Island.

The SAM conference brings together students interested in management and business professionals to learn more about the field, develop leadership skills and compete in various events, including the featured case competition. For the case competition, students are given a real-world case study and six weeks to prepare a presentation for the conference.

In the weeks leading up to the conference, my team developed a presentation based on a comprehensive case study focused on Senesco Marine. We had multiple sessions to brainstorm and refine our final presentation. I am grateful to have participated in last year’s Ethical Leadership Case Competition, which helped prepare me for this experience by outlining what to expect and how to structure the presentation. At the conference, we had the opportunity to present our work to industry leaders and a representative from Senesco.

During the conference, I met with 2025 ONU graduate Megan Dearth. Two of my teammates and I spoke with her about her current job, past internships and her college experience. In addition, I had the privilege of meeting Ted Williams, the President of Senesco Marine, who gave us a tour of his company. As a student, I found this experience inspiring. I would love the opportunity to interact with and give back to the next generation of students!

Other conference activities included a seafood social, a knowledge bowl competition, industry sessions, a scavenger hunt, a game called Business Walrus, a team dinner and an awards ceremony.

Anticipation was high at the awards ceremony. We sat through roughly two hours of awards before the announcement of the case competition results. The top three teams in each division were revealed, starting with the third-place team. After the second and third were announced, I assumed my team had not placed. However, we were announced as the first-place team!

I am proud of my team and cannot wait to see how we can improve in the coming years! This was my first time in Rhode Island, and I appreciated the opportunity to explore with such a dedicated group.

  1. Hello! I totally feel you, during the awards ceremony I thought we did not place at all, and I was so sad, but when they called us as first, I was so excited. It almost made it better because I did not expect it at all. I had so much fun on this trip with you, and I am so grateful to have been able to work with you, you did absolutely amazing!
