Breaking Down "Essentials of Social Media Marketing"

This semester my Principles of Social Media course covered the textbook "Essentials of Social Media Marketing". Students were encouraged to read each chapter before attending the corresponding lectures. Each chapter included multiple subunits, a slideshow presentation and four to five questions designed to reinforce key concepts. The textbook explored various social media platforms along with different outreach and engagement methods used in everyday marketing.

Chapter 1 introduced social media marketing and explained that there are about 5.24 billion active social media users worldwide. It also outlined nine essential skills that social media managers should possess, including community management, organized and effective, good writing skills, creative, adaptive, sales and customer service, strategic focus, decisive and analysis and search engine optimization.

Chapter 2 focused on building a personal brand, emphasizing consistency and audience awareness. Chapter 3 examined marketing strategies such as audience targeting, content planning and analytics.

Chapters 4 through 11 each focused on a specific platform and its unique features. Facebook, discussed in

Chapter 4, remains the largest platform with more than 3.07 billion monthly active users. Chapter 5 discussed Instagram, where the largest user demographic is ages 25 to 34. Chapter 6 explored X, which prioritizes conversation over promotion.

Snapchat, covered in Chapter 7, emphasizes real-time sharing and product reviews. Chapter 8 covered Pinterest, where weekly pinners are seven times more likely to view it as the most influential platform in purchasing decisions. Chapter 9 focused on LinkedIn, the top channel for B2B content distribution.

Chapter 10 examined YouTube, where users watch more than 1 billion pieces of content daily. Chapter 11 highlighted TikTok, which has an average engagement rate of 9%.

Finally, Chapter 12 discussed blogs, vlogs, podcasts and webinars, explaining how each format can be used to build meaningful connections with audiences and establish brand presence.

Compared with other textbooks I have used, this one was well-organized and easy to follow. Each chapter included key terms and clear topic divisions, making it easier to review important material.

As a frequent user of most of the platforms outlined in the textbook, I found it especially informative to better understand how they function behind the scenes. Before this course, I rarely considered analytics or performance metrics. However, this course emphasized their important roles in social media marketing.

While working on the Dicke social media pages this semester, I was able to apply skills from the textbook to crafting posts and thinking more strategically about audience engagement.

It is important to note that the class did not cover every chapter in the textbook, but the material that was covered provided a strong foundation in social media marketing.

  2. Hi Alexa! I also really enjoyed how organized this textbook was. It was mostly easy to find information that was needed. The slides that came with it helped me organize and read through the information so much better compared to an actual textbook. I was in the same boat as you running an organizations social media pages while taking this course and it helped me so much learning about it while applying. Have a great week!

  3. I like how you broke down each chapter and connected it to real platforms because it made the book feel more practical. I also relate to what you said about not thinking about analytics before, since that was a big takeaway for me too. It definitely changes how you approach posting and engagement.
